How to Find the Right Custom Tailor
A tailor is one of those relationships a man cultivates throughout his lifetime, so finding the right one is an important task. Visiting a tailor requires an investment of time, energy and money, so it’s essential to choose the right tailor shop where you can collaborate and work together. Below are four main tips to ensure a tailor is superior, custom, and a good fit for you.
Research the tailor’s experience. True experience only comes after years, and oftentimes decades, in the business. This allows a tailor to work with a wide range of clients and styles, so that while he may not personally share your style, he has experience with clients who do. Also, make sure the tailor has created custom clothing, as designing and manufacturing a suit from scratch requires a great amount of skill.
Understand how to differentiate between “made to measure” and “custom”. A “made to measure” garment is a suit that is completed and ready-to-wear. All a tailor needs to do is make small adjustments to the suit to match your body’s frame. Alternatively, a “custom” suit is manufactured completely from scratch. You could advise the tailor to use a particular width for the lapel, use a particular fabric, and to decide the placement of the buttons. The tailor will then cut the suit to fit to your exact specifications.
Investigate your tailor’s work. Discuss with your friends and coworkers who use custom Tailors and do some research online to see which tailors are rated best. Assess the quality of a tailor’s custom-made garments by making sure to observe the details, such as hand stitching and other handmade techniques. Tailors will usually explain their tailoring methods and show you examples of custom Suits they’ve designed.
Be sure your tailor operates at a physical shop. When you visit a tailor, be sure that four things are present: fabric swatches, examples of work and different styles, full-length mirrors and the right atmosphere. The customer service and the overall experience inside a tailor’s shop should be just as important as the clothing itself. An excellent tailor recognizes that you are having your garments tailored and, most importantly, building a lasting relationship with him or her. It is crucial for a tailor to work inside a physical location for appropriate service—if there’s not a brick and mortar store, they’re not getting it.
The most important thing in choosing the right custom tailor is to make sure it’s someone you’re comfortable visiting year after year. The better he or she gets to know you, the better your wardrobe will perfectly compliment your style.
